Abstract: What do gestures do in Dante’s works, particularly his Comedy? As I suggest that Dante’s gestures carry particular affective charges, I will interrogate the possible lenses of affect theory and the history of emotions for this medieval text. Taking a range of bodily signs in consideration, from interjections to smiles to blushes, this talk probes the edges of gestures to attempt to account for the ways in which the work of interpretation may constitute affective communities.
