Victoria Turner: 'Story, Fairy Tale, and the Chansons de Geste'
JAN 12, 2022
Session: Victoria Turner (University of St Andrews) 'Story, Fairy Tale, and the Chansons de Geste'
Whether conceptualised as soup, sea, language, or melody, fairy tale flows through the literature of the Middle Ages. This seminar will explore both fairy tale scholarship’s relationship to this period and the role of fairy tale in chansons de geste of the 13th to 15th centuries. Through one particular case study - narratives of children sold into slavery - fairy tale elements will be seen to dialogue with contemporary discussions of slavery and crusade, reframing anxieties and offering alternative avenues of cultural capture.
